Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced and technically strong Sales Manager to lead commercial sales activities while actively driving new business development within the South African and Sub-Saharan African steel markets.
The ideal candidate must have solid sales management experience within the steel industry, strong technical product knowledge and the ability to develop strategic customer relationships across key sectors such as mining, OEM manufacturing, fabrication, yellow equipment, construction, material handling, agriculture, forestry and transport equipment.
Ideal profile:
A senior steel fabrication Sales Manager with strong carbon steel plate knowledge, Quard® and Quend® exposure, value-added processing sales ability, technical drawing interpretation, sales team leadership and proven new business development experience.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience within the steel industry.
- Engineering qualification in Mechanical, Metallurgical or Industrial Engineering.
- Relevant tertiary qualification is essential.
- Proven experience in a Sales Management role from a steel fabrication background.
- Strong background in business development and new market growth.
- Experience selling carbon steel plate products.
- Knowledge of Quenched & Tempered steels would be highly advantageous.
- Good understanding of fabrication processes, welding, machining, cutting and forming.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Strong leadership, negotiation and communication skills.
- Customer-focused, commercially minded and results-driven.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Lead, mentor and develop the internal and external sales team.
- Set sales objectives, KPIs and performance targets.
- Conduct regular sales reviews and performance coaching.
- Develop and implement strategic sales plans to achieve company objectives.
- Identify and secure new customers across targeted industries.
- Reactivate dormant customer accounts.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with key customers.
- Grow market share within Quard®, Quend®, Structural and Pressure Vessel steel markets.
- Identify opportunities for value-added processing, including plasma cutting, drilling, countersinking, beveling and bending.
- Visit customers regularly to understand their technical and manufacturing requirements.
- Recommend suitable steel grades and processing solutions.
- Prepare annual sales budgets and forecasts.
- Monitor sales performance, profitability, pricing and margins.
- Provide market intelligence, competitor analysis and strategic input to senior management.
Performance Measures
The successful candidate will be measured on:
- Annual sales growth.
- Gross profit and margin improvement.
- New customer acquisition.
- Customer retention.
- Growth in Quard® and Quend® product sales.
- Expansion of value-added processing sales.
- Sales team performance and development.
