Overview
A leading steel tube and pipe manufacturing company based in Germiston is looking for an experienced, hands-on Engineering Manager to lead and manage all engineering, maintenance, utilities, facilities and technical services within a busy manufacturing plant.
This is a senior leadership role suited to a strong engineering professional with solid experience in steel manufacturing, tube and pipe mills, heavy industry or metals processing.
The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring plant reliability, legal compliance, safety, maintenance performance, cost control, CAPEX projects and continuous improvement across the engineering function.
Ideal profile:
A hands-on Engineering Manager with GCC Factories, GMR 2.1 experience, strong old-school technical ability, tube and pipe mill or steel manufacturing exposure, and the ability to troubleshoot older plant equipment, PLC-controlled machinery and technical drawings.
Minimum Requirements
- NQF Level 7 / 3-year Degree or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- GCC Engineer certification — Factories.
- 10+ years’ engineering experience.
- 8–10 years’ operational experience in an engineering or maintenance environment.
- Minimum 5 years’ management experience or senior engineering experience.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in steel manufacturing, tube and pipe mills, heavy industry or metals processing.
- Must be a hands-on, practical Engineering Manager with strong old-school technical ability.
- Able to troubleshoot older plant equipment and create or update drawings for older PLC-controlled machinery.
- ECSA registration would be advantageous.
- Code EB driver’s licence.
- Advanced SAP and MS Office skills.
- Intermediate CAD drawing skills.
- Strong problem-solving, planning, decision-making and leadership abilities.
- Proven ability to manage budgets, KPIs, contractors, suppliers and capital projects.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Manage engineering, maintenance, utilities, facilities and technical services.
- Serve as the GMR 2.1 appointee and ensure OHSA compliance.
- Develop and execute planned and preventative maintenance strategies.
- Ensure maximum plant availability, reliability and reduced downtime.
- Lead breakdown analysis, root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Manage mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, automation and civil engineering activities.
- Plan and execute CAPEX projects, plant upgrades and equipment installations.
- Manage contractors, vendors, OEMs, budgets, timelines and technical specifications.
- Ensure cranes, lifting equipment, factory buildings and infrastructure are legally compliant, certified and audit-ready.
- Drive a zero-harm safety culture within engineering and maintenance teams.
- Support production, quality and warehouse teams to achieve manufacturing output.
- Manage maintenance budgets, spares inventory, contractor costs and service agreements.
- Maintain asset registers, CMMS, drawings, SOPs and technical documentation.
- Report on KPIs such as equipment uptime, MTBF, MTTR and maintenance costs.
